The Victorian Museum Awards recognise and celebrate excellence in museum practice. They seek to reward the museums and individuals who strengthen Victoria’s museum industry through outstanding work and a commitment to best practice. 

Individuals

The Awards for Excellence for individuals recognise significant personal achievement in the three key areas of museum operations: Managing the Museum; Involving People and Communities; and Developing a Significant Collection.

In particular, the activities and contribution of individuals that meet and exceed the expectations of their paid and/or volunteer work is of importance.

There are two categories in the Awards for Individuals:

• Museums Australia (Victoria) Award for Excellence (Volunteer)
  Prize: Professional Development pack to the value of: $500 1st place, $250 2nd place
• Museums Australia (Victoria) Award for Excellence (Paid Staff)
  Prize: Professional Development pack to the value of: $500 1st place, $250 2nd place

Organisations

The Awards for Organisations acknowledge excellence and significant achievements by museums and their teams. Nominations are invited from organisations based in Victoria that demonstrate high achievement in the three main areas of public museum operations: Managing the Museum; Involving People & Communities; and Developing a Significant Collection.

There are five categories in the Awards for Organisations:

• TASHCO Systems Award for Volunteer Run Museums (up to 1 EFT paid staff member)
  Prizes: Winners of the TASHCO Systems Award win a showcase up to the value of $3,000 and advertising in the Herald Sun to the value of $5,526
• Archival Survival Museum Award for Small Museums (2-7 Paid Staff)
• Prizes: Winners of the Archival Survival Award win archival supplies to the value of $2,000 and advertising in the Herald Sun to the value of $5,526
• Museums Australia (Victoria) Award for Medium Museums (8-50 Paid Staff)
  Prize: Advertising in the Herald Sun to the value of $5,526
• Museums Australia (Victoria) Award for Large Museums (51+ Paid Staff)
  Prize: Advertising in the Herald Sun to the value of $5,526
• Herald Sun People’s Choice Award for the Best Museum Experience
  Prize: Advertising in the Herald Sun to the value of $5,526

The People’s Choice Award is generously sponsored by the Herald Sun Newspaper. Nominations for this award were via a coupon published in the Herald Sun on 18 May 2011.
